What Readers Want

I was thinking today about books (when I was supposed to be listening intently to a speak at my conference) and the ones I wanted to read. That led into how I needed to check off books on the notebook/list I carry in my purse. This led into what a bad idea that would be, because I probably would just add more in, and its already ridiculous.

One thing led to another, and I wondered, paranormal and urban fantasy and such are big right now. Mermaids are popping up all over. So what do readers want to see next? Are they ready for something new? Historicals? High fantasy? Hard scifi?

So, readers, what are you looking for? What do you love best and want to see more of, and what are you ready to lock in the basement?

In the same vein, what about authors? I have a couple of authors that I follow every book they bring out. Lately, I’ve realized that with one of them, I just don’t care for her new books. I keep trying, but I don’t like the world she’s created enough to keep reading and keep caring. Does anyone else do this and have the same problem?

I am a middle grade and young adult author, represented by Jennifer Mishler and Frances Black of Literary Counsel. I teach high school technology education in rural Virginia and am the slave to one cat, Molly. I spend all my free time writing. I am actively involved in the YA Fiction Fanatics critique group, which is dedicated to helping its members produce the best MG and YA novels they can write. I’m also a member of the SCBWI (Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators). When not writing, I’m reading, and an avid movie fan. I also love long walks on the beach discussing Shakespeare while sipping large fruity drinks with little umbrellas.

As both a reader and a writer, I have a thing for fantasy elements in YA. The more, the better – as long as it’s done well. I’ve always been this way, although I’m admittedly much less picky than I used to be.

I want something new. I don’t know what, exactly, but I’m getting tired of seeing the same story presented with different characters and different settings. I used to love reading YA, but lately I’ve been avoiding such books.

  4. I like anything interesting. I know, a hard thing to pinpoint but I know it when I see it.

  5. Hi Vanessa,
This is great, honestly I just say (as a writer) write what you love because trends change all the time; at one moment agents will say don’t send/write paranormal I’m tired of it but five years from now they might be tired of fantasy. Just make sure it’s well-written, no matter how “tendy” your writing is if it’s not well written it won’t sell. One thing is for sure historical fiction and contemporary fiction will always be “in”. As a reader I love urban fantasy (adult books mostly) and contemporary fantasy (YA mostly –with Percy Jackson being the exception), and historical and contemporary fiction. I also love a well, written funny memoir.

–Thanks for stopping by Whimsically Yours again and liking my post The Fairy Godmother Files: Cinderella Complex :)
